The research involved data from 853 people who exercised regularly and attended Wharton Medical weight management clinics in Ontario. The participants underwent various tests, including a maximal treadmill stress test to measure their cardiorespiratory fitness.
The subjects had different levels of obesity—from mild to severe. Results showed that 41% of mildly obese individuals who exercised were in excellent physical shape, putting them at the same level as toned fitness enthusiasts. Those with moderate and severe obesity found it more challenging to attain high fitness levels, but 25% of moderately obese people and 11% of severely obese people were extremely fit. The severely obese individuals who scored within the top 80% on their cardiorespiratory fitness tests were no more likely to have issues with high blood pressure, blood sugar, and triglycerides compared to non-obese individuals. This finding shows that exercise can significantly improve health, regardless of weight.
