Vitamin B3 Might Be a Hidden Hero Against Tough Infections

These groundbreaking findings were published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation by researchers from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University (OSU), UCLA, and other institutions.

When used in human blood, mega-doses of vitamin B3 appeared to wipe out staph infections in only a few hours. Co-first authors Pierre Kyme and Nils Thoennissen were intrigued by these results, but further studies are needed before any conclusive claims can be made.

Adrian Gombart, a researcher at the Linus Pauling Institute, warns that the results should not prompt people to take high doses of vitamin B3. There is no evidence to suggest that everyday diets or conventional-strength supplements containing the nutrient would provide any beneficial effects in preventing or treating bacterial infection.

Gombart and his colleagues believe their discovery could be significant, but tests on humans are still required before recommendations can be made.

“Antibiotics are wonder drugs, but they face increasing problems with resistance by various types of bacteria, especially Staphylococcus aureus,” Gombart says. “This could give us a new way to treat staph infections that can be deadly and might be used in combination with current antibiotics. It’s a way to tap into the power of the innate immune system and stimulate it to provide a more powerful and natural immune response.”

Should vitamin B3 prove effective in human trials, it could provide a breakthrough in the ongoing battle against antibiotic-resistant staph infections. Further research is essential to determine the nutrient’s exact capabilities, but preliminary findings offer a glimmer of hope for the future of this pressing public health concern.
