While it is often assumed that children commonly lean toward fats and sugar due to their natural tendencies, this study reveals that children’s preferences from different countries were not similar at all. The research examined the flavor preferences of over 1,700 children between the ages of 6 and 9 from various countries, including Italy, Estonia, Cyprus, Belgium, Sweden, Germany, Hungary, and Spain.

How Different Countries Affect Taste Preferences

The study showed some interesting results. Over 70% of German children preferred biscuits with added fat, while only 35% of children from Cyprus had the same preference. Most German children preferred plain apple juice, but Swedish, Italian, and Hungarian children chose apple juice with added sugar or flavors.

“This means that flavor preferences are influenced by cultural factors, but we also see that these tastes are developed in a similar way as children grow up,” notes Anne Lanfer, the study’s main author and researcher at the Institute for Prevention Research and Epidemiology in Bremen, Germany. The study also pointed out that in all eight countries, older children had a higher preference for sugar and salt than younger kids.
