Cell Phones and Cancer: What You Need to Know Now

Research continues to highlight the potential risks of long-term cell phone use and its association with malignant brain cancer. Evidence shows that cell phone radiation can penetrate the skull, affect blood flow and brain glucose metabolism, and may weaken our blood-brain barrier. A recent study in Sweden found that people who used cell phones for more than 25 years had a three-fold increase in malignant brain cancer compared to those who had used cell phones for less than one year.

Other research suggests that human saliva may serve as an indicator in proving the harmful effects of cell phones. Researchers in Israel found that mobile phone users had a higher increase in salivary markers for oxidative damage. Studies have also found that cell phones can directly damage cells in the salivary glands, causing them to become over-stimulated. Recent research has discovered that mobile phone radiation may also cause DNA damage and alteration of genes in brain cells.

Although the debate about the potentially harmful effects of long-term cell phone use is ongoing, we can take some protective measures to prevent or reduce possible risks linked to cell phones. Adopting an antioxidant-rich diet, as well as taking extra supplementation to help tackle oxidative damage, is a great starting point. Recommended antioxidants include vitamins C, A, E, and D3, lipoic acid, CoQ10, selenium, glutathione, and beta-1,3 glucans.

Other herbal and nutrient strategies include:

  • Sea buckthorn, which helps protect against radiation damage and provides antioxidant support
  • Rosemary extract, containing compounds that fight radiation damage and provide antioxidant support
  • Kelp, which contains sodium alginates that help remove radiation from the body
  • Honokiol (Magnolia bark extract), a powerful antioxidant and cell protector
  • Medicinal mushrooms, particularly Reishi and Cordyceps, which help protect tissues from oxidative stress and inflammation while detoxifying the body
  • Modified Citrus Pectin, which safely removes radioactive particles and heavy metals, combats inflammation, and blocks abnormal cellular growth

There are also several strategies you can use to reduce cell phone radiation exposure. Utilizing the speakerphone function or a headset with an air conduction tube leading to the ear are both helpful in this regard. Limiting conversation lengths and using text messaging instead of calling can also reduce radiation exposure. When not in use, it’s best to keep cell phones away from direct contact with your body, especially sensitive areas like the genitals, breasts, head, and thyroid. Additionally, try to avoid sleeping with your cell phone next to your head.

As cell phones continue to become the mainstay of personal communication, exposure to radiation will likely increase as well. It’s essential to take preventative measures, regardless of which side of the debate you fall on.
